IGLN

iShares Physical Gold ETC

£66.50Price per unit
17.1% / yr5-yr avg return
0.12%Annual fee
MediumRisk

Physical gold, not company shares. It won't compound like a business over the long run, but it often moves differently from stocks when markets fall, which is why some portfolios hold a slice as ballast. Its recent 5-year run is unusually strong; don't extrapolate it.

The 17.1% 5-year average is annualised from IGLN's 120% 5-year total return (Yahoo Finance, July 2026) and driven by an unusually strong recent run in gold. Don't extrapolate it. Past performance isn't a guarantee of future returns.

What does IGLN actually own?

Physical gold, not company shares. IGLN holds allocated gold bars in a secure vault, and each unit is a claim on real metal. Gold doesn't generate earnings the way a business does, so it won't compound over the long run, but it often moves differently from shares when markets fall. That low correlation is why some portfolios hold a slice of gold as ballast. Its recent 5-year run has been unusually strong; don't extrapolate it.

How we know this is halal

Shariah compliance

Screened by

Not applicable, physically backed

Certification

No issuer Shariah board; RMAU is a certified alternative

Why physical gold counts as halal:

1
Physical backing: IGLN holds allocated physical gold bars in a vault, not company shares or debt. Physically allocated gold meets the physical-backing requirement widely considered necessary for gold ownership to be halal.
2
No company screens needed: Because you own gold rather than businesses, the revenue, debt, and interest screens applied to equity funds don't apply here.
3
No issuer Shariah board: IGLN does not have its own Shariah supervisory board. If you want formal certification, The Royal Mint's RMAU is a Shariah-certified physical gold ETC alternative.
Purification

Physical gold pays no dividends and earns no interest, so there is no regular income to purify. Any return comes as a capital gain on the metal itself.
